At present, there is no official way to transfer the WhatsApp chat history between new devices, but the chatting platform is planning to update that soon for its users.

The chat migration is one of the biggest worries at the moment for WhatsApp users who want to switch their devices from iOS to Android or vice versa. Both platforms use different cloud backup sources, which makes it really hard for the user to retrieve any chats.

For those unaware, the Android version uses Google Drive, while the iOS version uses iCloud. The messaging app lets you back up your data to a third-party cloud storage app but doesn’t support chat history migration from one device to another.

The new feature will start rolling out with the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 phones and should gradually be available to more Android devices. The chat Transfer feature would be available on Samsung phones running Android 10 or newer versions. Samsung is targeting the iPhone user base, which didn’t want to change OS just because of the fear of losing their chats on WhatsApp.

Sandeep Paruchuri, product manager at WhatsApp Said:

“Your WhatsApp messages belong to you. That’s why they are stored on your phone by default, and not accessible in the cloud-like many other messaging services. We’re excited for the first time to make it easy for people to securely transfer their WhatsApp history from one operating system to another.

This has been one of our most requested features from users for years and we worked together with operating systems and device manufacturers to solve it.”

“The transfer will include the chat itself, photos, videos, and voice memos, and should be available to Samsung users in the “coming weeks.”
