Tesla’s CEO has repeatedly dropped hints and the company has reportedly started operations in India as well. But there is no fixed date for when Tesla cars will arrive in India. Even though there is no timeline for Tesla’s debut in India, Musk has once again clarified why Tesla has not come to India so far.

Every few months – or probably more – there’s someone or the other who asks Musk about Tesla’s plans in India or asks him to bring Tesla to India. A Twitter The user again made a “request” to Musk yesterday saying, “Dear Elon Musk, please launch the Tesla cars in India” followed by a love emoji.
Upon request, Musk said India’s import duties are by far the highest in the world for all major countries. “Plus, clean energy vehicles are treated the same as diesel or gasoline, which doesn’t seem quite in line with India’s climate goals,” Musk tweeted.

Musk also said that Tesla “hopes there will be at least temporary tariff relief for electric vehicles. It would be much appreciated. Obviously, he’s putting the ball in the Indian government’s court.
The CEO of Tesla appears to have a “bigger” plan for – if and when Tesla arrives – the Indian market. Another Twitter user asked him if locally assembled vehicles could be the way to go in the Indian market. To the question, Musk replied, “If Tesla is able to be successful with imported vehicles, then a factory in India is very likely.”

It could be music to the ears of the Indian government, but it still seems like a long way to go for Tesla in the country.
