What Is Hole In The Heart?

The human heart is a pumping organ that corresponds to the size of one’s fist(normally 200-400 gm). It is located in the thoracic cavity/cage in a space called Mediastinum. It functions to pump blood to all other body organs through a continuous pumping action.

What Is Hole In The Heart?

The human Heart comprises 4 chambers i.e two upper receiving chambers known as Auricles/Atrium & two lower distributing chambers known as Ventricles. The Right Atrium and Ventricles are separated by each other by the tricuspid valve while the left Atrium and Ventricles are separated by the Bicuspid valve(Mitral valve).

Functioning of heart??

What Is Hole In The Heart?

The impure blood through the whole body gets collected in the Right Atrium through the Superior and Inferior Vena Cava. The collected blood now moves to the Right Ventricle through the Tricuspid valve. Now Through the Pulmonary Artery, the blood is pushed into the lungs for purification. Here in the lungs, the oxygenation of blood takes place. Now the purified blood moves through the pulmonary vein into the Left Atrium.

Note – Pulmonary vein is the only vein carrying the oxygenated blood(Exception).while the Pulmonary Artery is the only Artery carrying the deoxygenated blood(Exception).

The blood passes into the Left Ventricle from the Left Atrium through the Bicuspid/Mitral Valve. Finally, after reaching the Left Ventricle, i.e the heart’s largest chamber, the blood is flushed for the whole body through the Systemic Aorta.

What is Hole in the Heart?

During the early stages of the development of the heart, there is a developmental depression between the 2 Atrium known as FOSSA OVALIS. Closure of this hole is a normal physiological procedure but sometimes it fails to close on its own leading to mixing of blood between the two auricles giving rise to various heart problems.

Some Amazing Facts-

  • The human heart corresponds to the size of One’s Fist.
  • Heartbeats about 72 times per minute.
  • Made up of a special type of cardiac muscles that are devoid of getting fatigued.
  • Tachycardia is an increase in heart rate.
  • Bradycardia is decreased in heart rate.
  • The heart is least prone to Cancer as the cells have stopped dividing.
  • The human Heart pumps about 2000 gallons of blood per day.
