The Dutton family is heading back to the ranch. In a move that surprised no one, Paramount Network has officially green-lit Yellowstone season 5, confirming that the next installment of the hit series will surge forward in 2022. With ratings escalating and a prequel just hitting screens, the new reveal doesn’t exactly come out of the blue, but it does cement the future of the Kevin Costner-led series for a little while longer, much to the delight of fans.
In the US, Yellowstone has found its footing during a particularly turbulent time for the entertainment industry. The record-breaking season premiere garnered over 14 million total viewers, with the most recent finale delivering over 15 million, and it’s a similar story across the globe. Here in Australia, Yellowstone is helmed by streamer Stan, which has enjoyed the fruits of creator Taylor Sheridan’s blockbuster since the first season. With a fifth installment heading Down Under, the jewel in Stan’s crown remains intact.
Sheridan’s original drama series chronicles the sordid lives of the Dutton family, led by Costner’s stoic hero John Dutton. As the patriarch for the family, John controls the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States, however, shifting alliances, unsolved murders, and open wounds threaten to derail the family’s foundations. Worst of all, the ranch is in constant conflict with those it borders, from the ever-expanding town to a Native-American reservation.
“Yellowstone’s record-breaking performance proves we’ve tapped a cultural nerve and unleashed a passionate audience from the center of the country to each of the coasts,” Chris McCarthy, president, and CEO of ViacomCBS Media Networks said. “Kevin Costner leads our incredible cast who make the Duttons America’s favorite family and, this new season is sure to be another one fans won’t want to miss.”
Production house 101 Studios confirmed that Yellowstone season 5 is slated to begin production in May, so it might be a little while before the series hit the small screen. That being said, there was some good news. For the fifth installment of the acclaimed SAG and PGA nominated series, guest stars Jen Landon and Kathryn Kelly have been upped to series regulars, alongside the world-class ensemble already established. Oscar-winner Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, and a host of more familiar faces are all returning for Yellowstone season 5, which promises to be one of the biggest TV series releases in recent memory.
“We are honored to be able to bring audiences another season of Yellowstone. The continued growth in viewership and the recent recognition from the guilds bolsters our commitment to continue to bring groundbreaking entertainment to audiences,” executive producer David C. Glasser, 101 Studios said.
