‘South Park’ Deal Promises 14 New Movies and a 30th Season

The creators of South Park, Trey Parker, and Matt Stone, recently signed a mammoth deal with ViacomCBS INC., which will ensure their cartoon is on-air until 2027.

Furthermore, the contract also includes 14 original films for the parent company’s new streaming service Paramount+.

‘South Park’ 14 New Movies and a 30th Season

With the company yet to fully disclose any financial figures, Bloomberg News reported the deal is around USD$900 million (AUD$1.2 billion), making it one of the largest TV deals in history. To compete in the ongoing “Streaming Wars” with the likes of Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime, Hollywood executives have been on a frantic hunt for online content to secure subscribers. In a statement, MTV Entertainment’s Chris McCarthy said creating new content with “tremendous talents like Matt and Trey, is at the heart of our strategy to continue growing Paramount+.”

With South Park contractually destined to reach its 30th season, the creators will also release additional longer-form episodes. The COVID-19 outbreak hampered their latest season, but the duo released two hour-long specials titled “The Pandemic Special” and “The ParQ Vaccination Special” in 2020, with the former nominated for a 2021 Emmy in the Outstanding Animated Program category.

“When we came to ViacomCBS with a different way to produce the show during the pandemic, Chris, Nina, Keyes, and Tanya were immediately supportive and enabled us to try something new that turned out to be really well received. We can’t wait to get back to doing traditional South Park episodes but now we can also try out new formats. It’s great to have partners who will always take a chance with us.”, Stone and Parker told The Hollywood Reporter.

Excitingly, the pair’s first of 14 movies is scheduled before the end of the year and will take place inside the world of South Park. This will be Stone and Parker’s latest film since Team America: World Police was released in 2004 and we can only hope it lives up to such a masterpiece.
