It’s lonely at the top…at least it used to be. The all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra has finally been unveiled and it’s a beefy pickup that threatens to cut in on Ford and Chevy’s territory. Featuring coil-spring rear suspension and an ultra-modern interior, the 389-HP twin-turbocharged V6 has the hallmarks of an all-American classic, with one handy addition – a power-boosting hybrid powertrain option.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra has been a long time coming. Fifteen years after the last incarnation debuted, the pickup has had to watch its counterparts in the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado undergo a series of reinventions, with the class-crushing RAM separating from Dodge entirely. The stagnant Toyota ute has suffered the consequences, with the Tundra significantly outsold by all three over the past few years, but 2022 brings a new year and new challenger for the throne.
The excitement is being underpinned by serious upgrades under the hood. The new 2022 Tundra is powered by a new twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine that replaces the previous model’s 5.7-liter V-8. According to the automaker, this engine will produce 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, which is a marginal increase from the previous model. That new powertrain is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, but Toyota didn’t just stop there.
In an effort to combat Ford’s new F-150 PowerBoost hybrid, Toyota revealed a hybrid version of the V-6 called iForce MAX, which comes standard on the TRD Pro. As per Car and Drive, it has a low-speed EV mode and uses an electric motor sandwiched between the twin-turbo 3.4-liter and 10-speed transmission.
The upgrade punches out a fair bit more power, as well, with 437 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 583 pound-feet of torque at 2400 rpm, good enough to topple the F-150 PowerBoost hybrid, much to the dismay of Ford fans. Towing capacity has also been bumped up with the Tundra able to tow up to 12,000 pounds, however, that’s still short of the Chevy, Ford, and Ram half-tonnes.
Inside, the 2022 Toyota Tundra looks vastly different from its predecessor. A massive 14.0-inch touchscreen on the TRD catches your eye straight off the bat, loaded with Toyota’s new Audio Multimedia interface. From the voice command, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto additions to the mobile app that can save driver settings and remote start the truck, this Tundra is one high-tech pickup.
Best of all, the new Tundra is built on Toyota’s new TNGA body-on-frame platform, which is set to power the new Tacoma and Sequoia. The TRD off-road package adds either 18- or 20-inch black TRD wheels, alongside the well-loved TRD grille and other accessories.
The 2022 Toyota Tundra is set to hit US showrooms by the end of the year in SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794, and TRD Pro models, with Toyota confirming the iForce MAX, will arrive a few months after. As for Australian fans, the wait might be indefinite. Toyota has not revealed any plans to bring the 2022 Tundra to Australia, but with the interest, this pickup is getting, it might be worth making the journey.
